The first lightkeeper at Cape Spear was Emmanuel Warre. In 1845 the government appointed James Cantwell as lightkeeper. Members of the Cantwell family have tended the light ever since. Even the present modernized facility is under the care of a descendant of Mr. Cantwell. World War II saw an increase of activity at the cape. Two gun emplacements were constructed and underground passages and barracks were built. Most of the installations were demolished after the war, but the gun emplacements still exist. Visitors can also explore the Bunkers built by Canadian Soldiers during the Second World War. When you visit Cape Spear, you will be closer to Cape Clear, Ireland, than Ontario's Thunder Bay.

Each year many icebergs float by Cape Spear on their journey. Another excursion on Route 11 could be to the small outport of Petty Harbour. Here you will see old wooden stages that were used to dry the salt cod that Newfoundland once supplied to the world. In recent years the photogenic aspects of Petty Harbour have been recognized by Hollywood and it has been the location of several feature films. TOUR CAPE SPEAR DRIVE NOW!
