NEWFOUNDLAND ICEBERGS
VISIT THE ICEBERGS OF NEWFOUNDLAND
Newfoundland and Labrador is the best place in the world to view icebergs. They can even be viewed from the shore on a warm summer's day. Thousands of these icebergs break off from 10,000 year old glaciers along the Greenland coast and are carried south along our shores. The numbers vary from year to year and most are seen in the late spring, and early summer.
Icebergs are made up of pure, fresh water, they float because the density of ice is less than the sea water. 90% of an icebergs mass is below water.
It takes an iceberg at least 2 years to travel the 1800 nautical miles from Greenland. The terms tabular, blocky, wedge, dome, pinnacle, and drydock are used to describe the shapes of icebergs.
The area from the Northern tip of Labrador to the Southern Grand Banks is known as Iceberg Alley. The average weight of an iceberg for a Grand Banks iceberg is up to two hundred thousand tonnes
